Why do so many teachers of RE mainly teach something else?

Teacher Statistics

This analysis of the data schools submit to the Department for Education as part of the annual school census, focuses on teachers who deliver Religious Education (RE) in England. It shows that too many teachers who mainly teach another subject are delivering RE, especially at key stage three. This situation must call into question the degree to which pupils are getting their statutory entitlement to high quality RE. If RE is taught to such an extent by those whose passion and training was in a different subject, this will impact on the number of pupils who will study a GCSE Full Course at Key Stage Four.
The report considers these and other questions.
