Year 6 – For Christians what Kind of King is Jesus? Sticky Knowledge
About this resource
The Year 6 Unit 41 lesson plan, ‚”For Christians, what kind of king is Jesus?‚ explores Christian beliefs about Jesus as king, not in a worldly sense, but as a servant king who rules through love, humility, and sacrifice. This unit challenges pupils to think critically about the concept of kingship and power in both religious and secular contexts.
Pupils are introduced to Biblical texts from the Gospels and prophetic writings, such as Jesus‚” entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, his teachings about leadership, and his crucifixion. These stories form the basis for understanding how Christians believe Jesus fulfilled expectations of a Messiah‚-not through military strength, but through servanthood, justice, and compassion.
The unit encourages ages philosophical enquiry and personal reflection. Pupils discuss the kind of leader they would follow and compare this with the qualities Jesus demonstrates. They also examine how Christian beliefs about Jesus as king influence their worship, language (e.g. calling Jesus ‚”Lord‚Äù), and daily lives‚-especially in how they treat others and make moral decisions.
Pupils also explore the concept of the Kingdom of God‚-not as a place, but as a way of living that reflects Jesus’ teachings. They consider how Christians try to make the world more like the Kingdom of God through acts of kindness, campaigning for justice, and living out their faith.
This unit provides opportunities for developing religious literacy, critical thinking, and personal responses to questions of authority, influence, and belief in modern society.
