Holy words – Ayats

My spiritual arts project is an art piece based on the Holy Words theme. I did this because the religion I believe in is based on words and not images. The Qur’an means to recite. It teachers us the way of life through words that are called Ayat’s. These represent stories on passed prophet’s lives. Holy words to me means many different things but they all have to do with the Islamic holy book, the Qur’an.

Some holy words that I have learnt as I grow older help me feel safe. I believe that certain words that I am taught from the Quran will protect me. This is because these are the words that were sent down from Allah to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH to protect him in his time of need. It was not only Prophet Muhammed PBUH that was protected, but many other prophets went through problems and turned to Allah for help. This is very important for me, in the current situation that I am in because of COVID 19. People today are faced with death and spreading of the disease with no cure. We are in lockdown and we have no idea when it will end.

The piece of art that I have produced is a key on top of a leaf. The key has the Arabic work Allah written on it. The Qur’an is filled with beautiful calligraphy. The writing is like a type of art. So, I have decided to use that in my picture. The reason why I chose the word Allah, other than the fact that it is the name of God, is because of 7 main things. These are simple words that we are asked to say every day that will help us live a good life and remember Allah. These words are:

Alhamdulillah: All praise is for Allah

Bismillah: In the name of Allah

Subhan Allah: Glory be to Allah

Astaghfirulla: I seek forgiveness from Allah

Insha’Allah: by the will of Allah

MashahAllah: Allah has willed it

The key represents the key to life and life is given by Allah. The reason it is a drawing of an old iron key is because I wanted to show the past and that the religion is also very old. I have also used the word Allah in Arabic calligraphy to show how beautiful the Arabic alphabet it.

The leaf in the background represents life. I used a leaf because it is part of nature and it is also a living thing. The technique used was rubbing with crayon. I did this because I wanted to show the veins of the leaf. The veins of a leaf transport water and food to the rest of the plant. I then used colour pencils to outline the veins to show that they are important. I sued the colours green and brown because they show the leaf when it is young and old.
