ERW6 Unit 5: What do stories of the Buddha teach many Buddhists?
About this resource
This unit starts with pupils looking at suffering and realisation within their own lives. They move on to the story of the Four Sights, identifying the suffering within this story and then Siddhartha Gautama’s response to it. Pupils progress to a larger focus on dukkha and sukha, including the Four Noble Truths. Concepts that pupils have encountered can then be found in the story of Kisi Gotami, with new ideas introduced, such as compassion. Pupils will look at what nine Buddhists have said about stories in Buddhism – a point to note here is that the teachings behind the stories are often emphasised. Finally, a question-and-answer activity can be used to assess learning.
