About this resource
“Learning Outside the Classroom”, from the Spring 2009 edition of RE Today magazine, explores the benefits of taking religious education (RE) beyond the traditional classroom setting. It highlights how outdoor learning experiences can enhance pupils’ understanding of religious and spiritual concepts through real-world exploration. The resource provides practical ideas for RE teachers to organise visits to places of worship, nature-based activities, and community-based learning experiences that bring religious studies to life. It also includes reflective activities to help students connect their experiences outside the classroom with their academic learning. This document encourages educators to use outdoor learning to foster deeper engagement with religious diversity, encourages aging pupils to see faith in action. Aimed at key stages, the resource supports teachers in creating dynamic, experiential learning opportunities that broaden pupils’ perspectives on religion and belief systems. It is a valuable tool for enriching the RE curriculum with meaningful, hands-on learning.
