Year 5 Unit 34, ‚”Creation and science: conflicting or complementary?‚ engages pupils in a thoughtful exploration of the relationship between religious belief and scientific understanding. The unit focuses particularly on the Christian creation narrative found in Genesis and the scientific theories of the Big Bang and evolution, encourages aging pupils to reflect on whether these views must be in conflict or can be understood as complementary.

Pupils begin by studying the Genesis 1 account of creation, exploring what Christians believe it teaches about the nature of God, the world, and human responsibility. They consider questions such as: What does it mean to be made in the image of God? and What responsibilities does that give to humans?

The unit then introduces scientific perspectives, such as the Big Bang theory and natural selection, and examines how scientists explain the origins of the universe and life. Pupils investigate how some Christians see science and faith as compatible, while others interpret the Genesis story more literally.

By comparing different viewpoints ‚Äì including those of Christian scientists, atheists, and people who hold non-religious worldviews ‚Äì pupils develop skills in critical thinking, interpretation, and respectful dialogue.
