EYFS Lesson Plan – Why do Christians perform Nativity plays at Christmas?
About this resource
The EYFS Unit 2, ‚”Why Do Christians Perform Nativity Plays at Christmas?‚ introduces young learners to the story of Jesus’ birth and its central place in the Christian celebration of Christmas. Designed for Early Years Foundation Stage children, this unit helps pupils explore the meaning behind Nativity plays, encourages aging them to reflect on love, giving, and special stories.
At the heart of this unit is the Christmas story from the Bible, retold in simple, engaging ways that are age-appropriate. Children learn about the main characters‚-Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, the shepherds, the wise men, and the angels‚-through storytelling, puppetry, drama, and craft. The unit emphasises the idea that Christmas is a time of celebration and joy, and that Christians perform Nativity plays to retell and remember the birth of Jesus, who they believe is God‚”s son and a gift to the world.
Activities are rooted in play-based learning, including acting out the story, dressing up, singing songs, creating star decorations, and discussing what it means to receive and give gifts. Children explore the values of kindness, welcome, and peace, drawing parallels with their own experiences of giving and being cared for.
The unit supports areas of the EYFS curriculum such as Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design, and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. It fosters spiritual growth by connecting children to the Christian faith in a way that is accessible and meaningful, helping them understand why traditions matter and how stories shape beliefs and celebrations.
Ultimately, this unit offers a warm and reflective introduction to Christian celebrations, reinforcing a sense of wonder, belonging, and shared joy.
