EYFS Which places are special and why? PowerPoint Lesson 2

About this resource

The EYFS Unit 5, ‚”Which Places Are Special and Why?‚ introduces young learners to the concept of special places within their own lives and across various religious traditions. The unit is structured to support Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) goals through inquiry-based activities that encourages age personal reflection and cultural awareness.

Children begin by identifying places that are special to them‚-such as their home, bedroom, a grandparent‚”s house, or the park‚-and explore why these spaces matter emotionally or personally. This personal context sets the stage for understanding religious places of worship, such as churches, mosques, synagogues, mandirs, and gurdwaras. The unit highlights that places can be special for different reasons: comfort, safety, celebration, learning, or spirituality.

Through storytelling, visual exploration, role play, and creative tasks, pupils learn how believers treat their places of worship with respect. They explore key features such as altars, prayer mats, holy books, symbols, and special clothing, and begin to understand why people gather in these spaces for worship, community, and celebration. Visits to local places of worship or virtual tours are encourages aged where possible, helping to bring the learning to life.

The unit strongly supports Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) and Understanding the World (UTW) within EYFS. It nurtures respect for diversity and promotes an early appreciation for the beliefs and practices of others. Pupils are encourages aged to compare their own experiences with those of people from different religious backgrounds, building empathy and curiosity.

Ultimately, this unit fosters spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development (SMSC) through child-led discovery and meaningful reflection. By focusing on what makes a place special, pupils begin to understand how physical spaces reflect identity, belief, and community, laying the foundation for further learning in Religious Education.
