EYFS Why is the word God so important to Christians? PowerPoint Lesson 1
About this resource
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) RE unit titled “Why Is The Word ‚”God‚” So Important To Christians?” introduces young learners to key concepts of Christian belief in a developmentally appropriate and engaging way. This unit is designed to support children aged 4‚Äì5 in understanding the foundational idea of God in Christianity, using storytelling, play, art, music, and simple theological discussion to engage their curiosity and spirituality.
At the heart of the unit is the Christian belief in God as Creator, with children exploring the idea that Christians believe God made the world and everything in it, and that God‚”s name is special and holy. The unit enables pupils to reflect on the concept of creation by linking it to their own experiences of the natural world, beauty, and care. Through this, they begin to understand why Christians show respect for God by using the name with reverence.
Using the story of Genesis 1 ‚Äì the Creation Story, children hear how Christians believe the world came into being, and they learn how to say ‚”thank you‚” for the world and talk about what they find wonderful or puzzling. The unit encourages ages children to make connections between the idea of God and things that matter to them, such as people they love, places they enjoy, or things they are thankful for.
Practical activities include exploring nature, creating artwork about the world, learning songs and prayers that refer to God, and using drama or role play to express gratitude and awe. These help lay the groundwork for religious literacy by developing vocabulary around Christianity, God, creation, and worship.
Overall, this EYFS RE unit gently introduces pupils to Christian belief in God, encourages ages spiritual development, and fosters respect and reflection, providing a strong foundation for continued RE learning. It aligns with EYFS goals in communication, understanding the world, and personal, social, and emotional development.
