The “Relationships and Families” Personal Learning Checklist (PLC)

About this resource

The “Relationships and Families” Personal Learning Checklist (PLC) from the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE) is a targeted revision and self‑assessment resource designed to support GCSE Religious Studies teaching and learning. It breaks the Relationships and Families theme into clear sub‑topics that align with common GCSE specification content, including sexual relationships (heterosexual and homosexual), marriage (purpose, ceremony, cohabitation), same‑sex marriage, divorce and remarriage, contraception and family planning, and ethical debates relating to gender roles, equality and family structures.

Students use the checklist to assess their confidence in each area, marking topics as “red, amber or green,” which helps them reflect on strengths and identify areas needing further revision. This supports independent revision and helps students prepare for 4‑, 5‑ and 12‑mark exam questions. For teachers, the PLC acts as a practical formative assessment tool to monitor understanding, tailor revision activities, and structure lessons around areas of misconception. Overall, the resource promotes organised revision, reinforces key concepts, and improves students’ confidence and exam readiness.
