Year 3 – How and why do people try to make the world a better place? – Assessment Sheet

About this resource

Year 3 Unit 24, ‚”How and why do people try to make the world a better place?‚ encourages ages pupils to explore ideas of goodness, morality, and social responsibility through the lens of religious and non-religious worldviews. This unit promotes personal reflection and ethical understanding, helping children consider how people of different faiths and beliefs are motivated to improve the world around them.

Pupils begin by examining the concept of right and wrong, exploring their own ideas about fairness, kindness, and justice. They explore the teachings and actions of significant individuals from a variety of traditions – including Christianity, Islam, and Humanism – who have worked to create positive change. Figures such as Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., or local community heroes may be explored to show how beliefs inspire action.

Through stories, role play, and discussion, pupils consider how religious teachings – such as the Golden Rule, Zakat in Islam, or Christian stewardship – encourages age believers to care for others, protect the environment, and help those in need. They also learn how non-religious values can lead to a commitment to ethical living and social justice.

This unit supports the development of empathy, moral reasoning, and critical thinking. It enables pupils to reflect on how they, too, can contribute to making the world a better place, linking RE learning with citizenship and spiritual development.
