Year 1 – How should we care for others and the world and why does it matter? Sticky Knowledge
About this resource
The Year 1 Unit 12 lesson plan, ‚”How Should We Care for the World and for Others?‚ is designed to help young children reflect on their responsibility for the world around them and the people within it. Aimed at pupils aged 5‚Äì6, this unit introduces the idea of stewardship, kindness, and moral responsibility, drawing on examples from Christian and Jewish teachings.
The unit explores how people of faith express care for creation and humanity, referencing biblical stories such as Creation in Genesis, the Good Samaritan, and Jewish traditions like tikkun olam (repairing the world). Children learn that caring for the Earth and other people is a shared human and spiritual duty, not limited to one religion or culture. The unit encourages ages positive action, empathy, and reflection through storytelling, discussion, creative arts, and role-play.
Pupils are guided to ask questions such as: Who do I care for? Who cares for me? How can I help others? Why should we look after animals and the environment? These prompts connect religious values to everyday experiences, helping children build moral awareness and an early understanding of ethical behaviour.
Learning is enriched by practical activities like drawing posters, sorting actions into helpful or harmful, and exploring how they can make a difference in school and at home. By the end of the unit, children develop an appreciation for compassion, community, and the importance of caring for the world and other people as an expression of both faith and shared humanity.
