Year 1 – What do Christians believe God is like? Sticky Knowledge
About this resource
The Year 1 Unit 10 lesson plan, ‚”What Do Christians Believe God Is Like?‚ helps pupils explore the Christian concept of God and how Christians understand His character and nature. Aimed at children aged 5‚Äì6, this unit provides an early introduction to theological thinking in a way that is age-appropriate, reflective, and engaging.
Central to the unit is the exploration of stories from the Bible that reveal Christian beliefs about God being loving, forgiving, powerful, and kind. Stories such as The Lost Son (Luke 15) or The Lost Sheep are used to illustrate how Christians understand God as a Father figure who cares deeply for His people, forgives mistakes, and always welcomes people back.
Through drama, storytelling, discussion, and creative activities, children begin to understand how these stories shape Christian worship, prayer, and values. The unit also invites pupils to reflect on how Christians respond to God’s love‚-by showing kindness, saying sorry, and forgiving others‚-thus linking religious belief to personal action.
This unit encourages ages respectful comparison with children‚”s own experiences and beliefs, supporting their development of spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) understanding. Pupils begin to articulate their own ideas about God while learning key RE vocabulary such as parable, forgiveness, and worship.
Overall, the unit lays an essential foundation in Christian theology by highlighting what Christians believe about God‚”s nature, supporting early religious literacy, and fostering curiosity and empathy in young learners.
