Year 1 – What does it mean to belong to a faith community? PowerPoint Lesson 2

About this resource

The Year 1 Unit 11 lesson plan, ‚”What Does It Mean to Belong to a Faith Community?‚ introduces young pupils to the concept of religious belonging through accessible and engaging learning experiences. Aimed at children aged 5‚Äì6, this unit encourages ages exploration of what it means to be part of a faith community, focusing particularly on Christian and Muslim practices, while promoting respect for diverse worldviews.

Through stories, images, songs, and activities, children investigate how people show they belong and what being part of a religious group looks like in everyday life. Pupils are introduced to key symbols of belonging, such as baptism in Christianity and welcoming ceremonies in Islam. They learn about shared practices, such as prayer, celebrations, festivals, and acts of kindness and charity, helping them to see how faith communities support their members.

The unit also encourages ages personal reflection by asking children to consider groups they belong to‚-like families, schools, or clubs‚-and how those groups make them feel valued, included, and connected. This comparative approach fosters empathy, identity awareness, and community understanding.

Structured around creative expression and discussion-based learning, the unit includes drawing activities, storytelling, role-play, and song, which support development across the RE, PSHE, and SMSC curriculum areas. By the end of the unit, children are better equipped to understand the importance of religious communities, the values of commitment and inclusion, and the meaning of shared beliefs and practices in shaping religious identity.

This unit is essential for building early religious literacy, supporting children‚”s understanding of faith, diversity, and belonging.
