Year 2 – What makes some places special to believers? – Unit 18 Lesson 5

About this resource

The Year 2 Unit 18 lesson plan, ‚”What Makes Some Places Special to Believers?‚ introduces pupils aged 6‚Äì7 to the idea of sacred places in different religious traditions. It enables learners to explore spiritual geography, understanding that certain places carry special meaning, particularly within the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faiths. This unit supports pupils‚” religious literacy and helps build respect for diverse religious worldviews.

Through a series of creative, reflective, and experiential activities, children explore why places such as churches, mosques, and synagogues matter to believers. Pupils examine artefacts, symbols, rituals, and practices associated with these spaces, enhancing their understanding of how sacredness is expressed through worship, prayer, gathering, and celebration.

The unit encourages ages pupils to identify what makes a place feel special to them and to compare this with the significance of religious buildings for people of faith. Through this process, they develop the ability to articulate their own thoughts while showing curiosity and empathy towards others‚” beliefs. The unit supports key RE outcomes by encourages aging children to ask thoughtful questions and make links between their own experiences and the religious experiences of others.

Pupils also learn how sacred places often represent a sense of belonging, identity, and community. This supports broader themes of religious commitment, spirituality, and meaning-making in the RE curriculum. By the end of the unit, children develop a greater appreciation for the value of places of worship in people‚”s lives, both locally and globally.
