Year 4 – How and why do people mark the significant events in life? – PowerPoint Lesson 5
About this resource
Year 4 Unit 30, titled ‚”What are the deeper meanings of the celebrations?‚ explores how different religious and non-religious worldviews mark significant life events, focusing on their symbolic meanings, emotional depth, and spiritual importance. This unit supports children‚”s understanding of Rites of Passage, including birth, coming of age, marriage, and death, across faiths such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, and also within secular worldviews.
Pupils investigate questions such as: Why do these events matter? What do they show about the values and beliefs of a community? Using stories, artefacts, videos, and real-life examples, children explore the ways in which key events are ritually celebrated and what they reveal about identity, belonging, family, community, and faith.
By comparing rituals like baptism, naming ceremonies, bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings, and funeral practices, pupils identify both similarities and differences across traditions. They also consider their own experiences and feelings about life transitions, fostering empathy and a personal connection to the learning.
The unit provides opportunities for creative and reflective tasks, including artwork, drama, and discussions that help children express their understanding of celebration, symbolism, and human values. It also encourages ages respectful enquiry into religious practices and the meaning behind them.
By the end of the unit, pupils will be able to explain how rituals and celebrations help people express what they believe is most important in life, making links between belief, practice, and personal meaning.
